Cori: Good evening Ms. Horney my name is Cori Miracle. It’s very nice to meet you! I am so glad you came here from Germany!
Karen Horney: Oh, why hello! Please call me Karen. It’s always nice to be interviewed by these young whipper snappers! I am German but I immigrated here in 1932 so it wasn’t that much trouble. The only trouble was these crazy New Yorkers not letting a poor old lady cross the street! I say it is not the same as it was back in my day!
Cori: What first made you interested in science? I always liked it because it came natural to me! Did you go to college or have mentors?
Karen Horney: Well Cori I always used to say, “If I can’t be pretty I will be smart.” I didn’t attend college nor have mentors. I went to medical school which my parents were not very happy about. I went on despite their wishes. I think it helped me look at the human body differently and have a better understanding. I suppose you could count that as college. In school I met my ex-husband Oscar Horney. He was a law student! We had three beautiful daughters. After the death of my mother in 1911 and my brother in 1923 we separated and I moved here to America with my three daughters. I am sure glad I moved here! America is where I made my theories on neurotic personality.
Cori: Oh wow that must have been hard! Did you have religious views or just science? Was there any artists or musicians that influenced you?
Karen Horney: It was very hard especially with my mental illness of depression. I had thoughts of suicide after my brother died. I am a Christian. I think that my faith helped me overcome so many obstacles in my life time. I had so many. “Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.” That is a song I heard around here. I like it, it relates a lot to me. I am a proud Christian. This is how I think I was able to come up with my theory on neurotic personality. It showed me that I could be strong enough to get through my depression and help people.
Cori: Oh my! If you could explain to me what neurotic personality is?
Karen Horney: Well neurotic needs are basically ways to deal with anxiety. Anxiety is being nervous. For example, if you are afraid of spiders you freak out when you see one until it is smashed or goes away. This is basically the same thing but much more complicated. People with neurotic personality will have a very hard time to come back down from this panic. This is when I created neurotic needs which shows how to cope with these anxiety issues and how to calm down.
Cori: Wow that must be scary! What was there in your time period to help these people, how much was known about the neurotic theory?
Karen Horney: Well Cori back in my time there was no medicine for this so I wrote my theory and I wrote a book on how to cope with this problem. In today’s time medicine is only prescribed if it interferes with your everyday life. The first actual theory was made by Sigmund Freud so there wasn’t that much known. I disagreed with Sigmund Freud’s theory but it helped me make my own. My theory is supposedly the best theory there is yet today.
Cori: Wow, what are some of your accomplishments?
Karen Horney: Hmmm, let me think here dearie, if I recall correctly I have written 11 books. Not all on neurotic personality, some are on psychoanalysis, one other topic, I can’t think of it right now, I hate being old. I’ll remember later on sweetheart. I hope.
Cori: Do you have any more accomplishments?
Karen Horney: Yes there is a clinic named after me in New York! It has a foster care program, adult treatment program, child care/adolescent services, and treatment for incest and abuse. It was opened May 6th 1955.
Cori: That is amazing. I wish I had a clinic named after me! Was it easy, what were your obstacles?
Karen Horney: Oh my lord no! Since I was a female scientist my work was not easy. Around 1940 I want to say, a man named Fritz Whittles wrote some nasty things about me and Sigmund Freud. He got me removed from my supervisory role in New York Psychoanalytic Society. Funny thing is he had no idea that opened the door for a bunch of female psychologists. Their theories were more recognized for the female movements in 70’s and 80’s. I was recognized as a heroine for opposing sexism. HA! THE OTHER TOPIC! I remember. I wrote a book on sexism.
Cori: I honestly don’t know what to say to that! Did you have troubles with social class or?
Karen Horney: Well my late husband was a lawyer and since it was a man’s world we were doing pretty well for ourselves but as I said before, we got divorced and I came to the United States.
Cori: Wow I am so happy I got to talk to you Ms. Horney. I learned so much! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to come and talk to me!
Karen Horney: Oh no problem at all! You can come visit me any time you would like too! I’m glad you learned a lot from me and my theories!
Cori: Have a nice day and goodbye.
Karen: Auf wiedersehen, or goodbye in German.
